Changes In The iTunes Universe

The rumors were true.  At the MacWorld conference today, an Apple executive announced that they are dropping the anti-piracy protection and initiating variable pricing on music downloads from iTunes.

Starting now, songs from the four major labels and independents will be sold without the DRM software that limited the number of times a song could be transferred between devices or burned to CD.  By March all the songs will be DRM free.  Those of us who have bought DRM songs in the past will be able to get the limitations removed for another 30¢.  I’ll have to give that careful consideration because it could cost me a fortune.  I’ve been known to go a little download crazy.

Instead of offering all songs at 99¢, there will be three pricing tiers – 69¢, 99¢ and $1.29.  In a very vague statement, Apple promises that “many more” songs will be priced at 69¢ rather than $1.29.

Movie and TV show downloads will continue to be sold with DRM.
